Mobile-Friendly Websites Matter Evermore

Looking to finish what they started last April, Google took to their official blog today with another big announcement. According to the Google Powers-That-Be, “beginning in May, we’ll start rolling out an update to mobile search results that increases the effect of the ranking signal”. Businesses that have mobile-friendly websites already, the announcement says, will “not be impacted” by this change, but businesses who don’t better think twice about sticking with what they have any longer.

What does this news on mobile-friendly websites mean to you?

If you’re a mobile web user and find yourself frustrated by non-mobile-friendly websites still showing up in mobile SERPs, then this update will have you grinnin’. I mean, let’s face it. We all hate pulling out our phones for a quick Google search only to click through to a site that we can’t really read when we get there.  #firstworldproblems 🙂

What if you’re a website owner? What does it mean to you then? Well, if you paid attention last year when Google started “Mobile-geddon” in the first place, then you already have a mobile-friendly website and you have nothing to fear. Really, it’s just going to shove your competitors who didn’t out of your way in mobile search results. No need to panic. Google often turns up the dial on a new ranking signal gradually, increasing the pressure and ratcheting up the strength in stages to allow websites the time to improve. After all, Google wants to serve quality content and a top notch user experience to its users so it doesn’t help the search engine any to penalize sites that have great content from its results just because they haven’t had the time to catch up with the newest technical standard.
